Wet Dry Vacuum Cleaners

Wet Dry Vacuum Cleaners

The wet/dry vacuum cleaner combination is no longer

just for a workshop.  Over the years, the driving

technology has improved a great deal, deceasing

the loud screeching noises that the vacuums were

so very well known for.

When you go out to buy a wet/dry vacuum with both

wet and dry features, you'll need to know some of

the details.  The vacuums are available in a variety

of different sizes and HP, ranging from 6 - 22 gallons

and 1.5 - 10.5 HP.  The capacity of the wet/dry

vacuum should match your needs in the following

ways:

1.  Wall mount vacuum cleaners with 1.5 HP

and a 1 gallon tank are available for quick and easy

cleanup jobs, such as spills.  You can also hang

this type on the wall as well, which will keep it out

of your way.

2.  The six gallon vacuum cleaners are ideal

for smaller jobs and are easy to maneuver and store

than a larger model.  Keep in mind however, that the

smaller wet/dry cleaners are much louder and also

more prone to tipping over.  The smaller the tank,

the more often you will have to stop and empty it.

3.  Higher capacity models are recommended

if you have a workshop or garage where larger spills

occur.  A large capacity tank will decrease the number

of times that you have to empty the tank.

When you looking for the best wet/dry vacuum for

you, you should look for the following options and

features:

-  The pleated cartridge filter.  It is

reusable and rinseable, and provides more filtration

area than the flat filter and it doesn't need to

be removed when you switch from the dry to wet

vacuum function.

-  An automatic shut off device is available

with most newer vacuum cleaners.  This mechanism

will shut off the motor automatically once the

tank has become full of water, which will prevent

it from overflowing.

-  A wide set of wheels will help to prevent

the vacuum from tipping over.

-  There are some of the larger models that

have the ability to convert to a leaf blower, which

is great if you have a lot of trees in your yard.

-  Some wet/dry models have a built in pump

attachment as well.  This type of attachment will

allow the water to be pumped through a garden hose

that attaches to the vacuum.

-  A handy drain valve or sprout will make

emptying the vacuum cleaner a snap.  If it doesn't

have this feature, you'll have to remove the

lid and tip the vacuum to the side to empty all of

the water.  Depending on how much water you have

in the tank, you could easily and accidentally

spill it on the floor.  The smaller types of wet/dry

vacuums normally don't have a spout or drain

option.

-  Wider hoses and floor nozzles are great

to have as well.  The wider the hose and nozzle

are, the less likely the vacuum will be to clog up

on you.

If they aren't provided with the vacuum you decided

on, you can also purchase the following attachments:

1.  Crevice tool - this handy tool will

easily get in tight corners and around floor edges.

2.  Extension wand - this will make the hose

longer for hard to reach areas.

3.  Hose couplings - this will join the

extension wand to the hose.

4.  Combination nozzle - this helps to

alleviate the need of switching nozzles before you

switch functions.

5.  Gulper nozzle - this tool is ideal for

the wet vacuum function.

6.  Round brush - this nifty little tool

is ideal for scrubbing.

7.  Cleaning kit - this kit will include

everything you need to clean delicate upholstery and

other areas as well.

- 1/8 c. almond slivers

- 1/2 c. dried apricot halves, roughly chopped

- 1/2 cup Finely Chopped Cilantro

- 1 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil

- 2 c. fat free chicken broth

- 1 Tbsp. flour

- 1 tsp. fresh ginger root, minced

- Salt and ground black pepper

- 1 Tbsp. honey

- 1 onion, finely chopped

- 2 large boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1-inch cubes

Preparation

In a pie plate, combine the flour and Moroccan spice mixture.

Add chicken pieces and toss to coat.

Heat oil in your pressure cooker over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the chicken pieces and allow to brown for one minute per side.

Remove chicken from pressure cooker and set aside. Reduce heat to medium and add ginger and onions.

Add the apricots, whole tomatoes, chicken broth or stock, and browned chicken pieces to the pot. Cover and bring to low pressure over medium-high heat. Once you have reached pressure, cook for eight minutes then remove from heat and release the pressure using the quick release method (open the steam valve). Stir in the chickpeas, almonds, and honey and let them warm for a few minutes. Check your chicken for done ness and taste the tagine. Adjust salt and pepper as needed.

Serve over couscous and garnish with cilantro leaves.*If using a Dutch Oven instead, follow steps 1-4 as described, then bring the mixture to a boil, reduce to a simmer, and cook for 20-25 minutes or until apricots are tender. Continue with step 6.

Variety in your New Vegetarian Diet

Variety in your New Vegetarian Diet

You’ve weighed your options carefully, studied the pros and the cons, and decided that the vegetarian lifestyle is right for you. But where do you start making the changes? Do you go ‘cold turkey?’ Do you adopt a more gradual approach to transitioning to vegetarianism? However you choose to make the change, you can begin to achieve the health benefits of vegetarianism by significantly cutting down on the amount of meats consumed, and making vegetables, fruits, legumes, and whole grains the focus of your meals.

Choose whole-grain products like whole wheat bread and flour, instead of refined or white grains. Eat a wide variety of foods, and don’t be afraid to try vegetables, fruits, grains, breads, nuts, or seeds that you’ve never tried before. Experiment and explore! You may discover a new favorite or two, and learn fresh new ways to liven up more traditional vegetarian dishes. Many vegetarian foods can be found in any grocery store. Specialty food stores may carry some of the more uncommon items, as well as many vegetarian convenience foods. When shopping for food, plan ahead, shop with a list and read food labels. And if you decide to eat dairy products, choose non-fat or low-fat varieties, and limit your egg intake to 3-4 yolks per week.

Becoming a vegetarian can be as easy as you choose to make it. Whether you enjoy preparing delectable, delicious meals or choose quick and easy ones, vegetarian meals can be very satisfying. If you get in the habit of keeping the following on hand, meal preparation time will become a snap:

-Ready-to-eat, whole-grain breakfast cereals, and quick-cooking whole-grain cereals such as oatmeal, whole-grain breads and crackers, such as rye, whole wheat, and mixed grain and other grains such as barley and bulgur wheat

-Canned beans, such as pinto, black beans, and garbanzo beans

-Rice (including brown, wild, etc.) and pasta (now available in whole wheat, spinach, and other flavors) with tomato sauce and canned beans and/or chopped veggies

-Vegetarian soups like lentil, navy bean, or minestrone

-A wide variety of plain frozen vegetables, and canned and frozen fruit

-Fortified soymilks and soy cheeses, should you choose to not eat dairy

-A wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, which should be the core of any diet

As you learn to experiment with foods and learn that a meatless diet doesn’t have to lack variety, you’ll find your decision for vegetarianism was not only wise, but easy and fun come mealtime.

What Is The Raw Food Diet?

What Is The Raw Food Diet?

Have you started hearing about the Raw Food Diet? It’s gaining popularity and buzz, not just as a diet to lose weight, but a diet for a long and healthy life. We eat so much in the way of processed food that we don’t even stop to think about what we’re putting into our bodies, and how far we’ve come nutritionally from our ancestral, agrarian roots.

A raw food diet means consuming food in its natural, unprocessed form. There are several common-sense rationales for why this is a good idea. Processing and cooking food can take so much of the basic nutritional value away. Think of some of the conventional wisdom you’ve heard about for years, such as: If you cook pasta just to the al dente (or medium) stage, it will have more calories, yes, but it will have more the nutritional value in it than if you cooked it to a well-done stage. Or you probably remember hearing not to peel carrots or potatoes too deeply, because most of the nutrients and values are just under the surface.

The raw food diet means eating unprocessed, uncooked, organic, whole foods, such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, dried fruits, seaweeds, etc. It means a diet that is at least 75% uncooked! Cooking takes out flavor and nutrition from vegetables and fruits. A raw food diet means eating more the way our ancient ancestors did. Our healthier, more fit ancestors. They cooked very little, and certainly didn’t cook or process fruits and vegetables. They ate them RAW. Their water wasn’t from a tap; it was natural, spring water. Maybe they drank some coconut milk on occasion.

Doesn’t it just make sense that this is how our bodies were meant to eat? It’s a way of eating that’s in harmony with the planet and in harmony with our own metabolisms. Our bodies were meant to work, and need to work to be efficient. That means exercise, certainly, but it also means eating natural, raw foods that require more energy to digest them.

Use Old Crayons to Make Candles

Use Old Crayons to Make Candles

If you have children in your home, chances are you have an abundance of worn down crayons that don't get used much anymore. Before throwing them out and buying new ones, consider using them to make candles. This can be a great way to turn them into something new and bright again. Most children will love the idea of creating candles with you and enjoy knowing their old crayons helped create them. Making candles out of crayons can also be a great gift giving idea.

Before you get started, discuss safety with your children. Since the crayons will have to be melted at a very high heat, they will not be able to participate in that portion of the candle making process. Assure them that there are many other aspects of the candle making that they can be a part of. To start, gather your supplies. In addition to the crayons, you will need a wax cartoon. This can be from milk, fabric softener, or orange juice. You will also need paraffin wax, two full ice cube trays, a double boiler, and white packing string. If you don't want to use your double boiler an old coffee can and a saucepan will work just as well.

Trim the top off of the wax carton, leaving it approximately six inches high. You will want to cut the string at least 8 inches long. You will later cut the wick to fit the holder. To ensure a wick that burns easier take three pieces and bread them together. Use smaller pieces of string to tie the ends together. The holders for your candles can be anything you desire as long as they are non-flammable. Pretty vases, glasses, and jars work nicely.

Melt about three pounds of paraffin wax in the double boiler or coffee can. To help it melt faster, cut it into small chunks. The melting process with take about fifteen to twenty minutes. While the wax is melting, peel the papers off of the old crayons. You and your children can choose to separate the colors by lights and darks to have a mix that melds well or you can mix it all together and see what the color ends up being.

For best results, only add the crayons to the wax after it has completely melted. After the crayons and wax have both melted together, immediately remove the mixture from the stove and pour into your candle holders. If you would like to make scented candles try adding a splash of cinnamon or vanilla to your hot wax mixture.

It is important that the candles by left alone to completely harden. Make sure you have an area this can be done without disruption. It is also important to make sure small children can't reach them, as out of curiosity they may want to check on their candles. The wax will stay hot for several hours and can scold the skin.

Making candles out of old crayons is a great way to spend the afternoon creating a neat project with your children. This process can also be done at schools and childcare centers with old crayons as presents for parents. Simply allow each child to decorate the outside of their candle holder while adults complete the rest of the process.

What Is Chicken Tortilla Soup?

Chicken tortilla soup is a Mexican-inspired dish featuring a rich tomato-based broth, tender shredded chicken, and a blend of spices like cumin, chili powder, and oregano. It’s typically topped with crispy tortilla strips for added texture and crunch. This version takes the classic recipe and simplifies it with the help of a slow cooker, making it accessible for even the busiest home cooks.

Tips for the Best Slow Cooker Chicken Tortilla Soup

Use Quality Stock: The broth is the foundation of any good soup, so opt for a high-quality, low-sodium chicken stock. Homemade stock is even better if you have it on hand.

-Bone-In Chicken for Extra Flavor: While boneless chicken works, bone-in chicken thighs add richness and keep the meat tender and juicy.

-Make It Vegetarian: Skip the chicken, add an extra can of black beans, and use vegetable stock for a meat-free version.

-Customize the Heat: Add a diced jalapeño for a spicy kick or stick with mild diced tomatoes if you prefer a milder flavor.

-Don’t Forget the Toppings: Avocado, shredded cheese, fresh cilantro, lime juice, and crispy tortilla strips (or crushed tortilla chips) take this soup to the next level.

How to Store and Freeze

-Storage: Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.

-Freezing: Let the soup cool completely, then portion it into freezer-safe bags or containers. Lay the bags flat in the freezer for easy stacking. The soup will keep for up to 2 months.

-Reheating: Thaw overnight in the fridge and reheat on the stovetop over low heat, stirring occasionally until warmed through.

What to Serve with Chicken Tortilla Soup

This soup is hearty enough to stand on its own, but it pairs beautifully with a variety of sides:

-Mexican Rice

-Buttermilk Cornbread

-Mini Chicken Quesadillas

-Southwestern Chopped Salad with Cilantro Lime Dressing

Frequently Asked Questions:

Can I use chicken breasts instead of thighs?

Yes, chicken breasts work, but thighs are recommended for their juiciness and richer flavor.

What is chipotle pepper in adobo sauce?

Chipotle peppers are smoked and dried jalapeños rehydrated in a tangy, slightly sweet adobo sauce. They add a smoky, spicy depth to the soup.

Can I make this on the stovetop?

Absolutely! If you don’t have a slow cooker, check out our stovetop version [here].

The Secret to Crisp, Delicious Salads: Chill Your Plates!

The Secret to Crisp, Delicious Salads: Chill Your Plates!

If you’re a salad lover, you know that a great salad is all about balance—crispy greens, fresh veggies, and a zesty dressing that ties it all together. But even the most carefully crafted salad can fall flat if the greens turn limp or soggy. Luckily, there’s a simple trick that chefs and salad experts swear by to keep your salads fresh and crisp: chill your salad plates or bowls before serving.

Why Chilling Your Plates Makes a Difference

According to Sheela Prakash, author of *Salad Seasons* and *Mediterranean Every Day*, wilting lettuce can ruin a salad in no time. By chilling your serving bowl or plate for 10 to 20 minutes before assembling your salad, you can help prevent this. “Just like serving hot food on a warmed plate keeps it warm, serving salad in a chilled bowl keeps it crisp long after you’ve tossed it with dressing,” she explains.

Chef Ann Ziata of the Institute of Culinary Education agrees, noting that many restaurants use this technique to maintain the quality of their salads. “The science of cooking has everything to do with time and temperature,” she says. “When two objects touch, heat transfers from the warmer object to the cooler one. A chilled plate will keep your salad from getting limp, wilted, or even ‘cooked’ if the plate is too warm.”

Even if your plate isn’t hot, a room-temperature dish can raise the temperature of your salad ingredients, especially leafy greens, making them less crisp.

Putting It to the Test

Skeptical? So was I—until I tried it myself. I took three salad plates: one chilled in the fridge for 20 minutes, one left at room temperature, and one warmed in the microwave for 30 seconds. I then placed the same arugula salad on each plate and observed the results after 10 and 30 minutes.

The difference was striking. The greens on the chilled plate stayed noticeably crisper and fresher, while the salad on the warmed plate wilted quickly. Not only did the chilled-plate salad have a better texture, but it also looked more vibrant and tasted fresher.

A Simple Step for Better Salads

This small but impactful trick is especially useful when entertaining, as it ensures your salads stay crisp and appealing throughout the meal. But it’s also worth incorporating into your everyday routine—even for solo lunches or dinners.

So, the next time you’re preparing a salad, take a moment to chill your plates or bowls. It’s a quick, easy way to elevate your salads and keep them tasting their best.

Serve & Enjoy: Slice in half and serve hot for the ultimate Reuben experience.

The use of cakes on special occasions is so common today that it can easily be mistaken for a norm. Although this perception is not true, cakes are still an essential item in most occasions. Cupcakes are a special type of cake that comes in smaller shapes. They are often preferred for special occasions because they are tasty, delicious, and uniquely shaped.

How to Make Birthday Cupcakes

Generally, birthday cupcakes are very easy to make, and the processes involved are not too complicated. You just have to make sure you are going about it the right way. Here is a typical way to mix and make your Birthday Cupcakes.

  • Preheat oven to about 350o.
  • Apply a light coating of cooking oil to the cupcake pan and use paper lines to line the pan to avoid sticking
  • Filter the dry ingredients like flour to remove lumps.
  • With the aid of a bowl, mix butter and sugar and beat until it turns fluffy.
  • Mix eggs in a separate bowl and add to the fluffy mixture of butter and sugar and mix thoroughly.
  • Add liquid flavorings to the mixture. You can use vanilla, chocolate, or any other flavor.
  • Divide the dry ingredients into two halves. Add the first half to the butter, egg, and sugar mixture and mix thoroughly. Add a little water to prevent lumps, and then repeat this process when adding the other half of the dry ingredients to the mixture. Do not over mix to avoid the cupcakes being airy and dry.
  • Now fill the mixture in the cupcake pans using a spring load ice cream scoop.
  • Once the pans are full, load into the hot oven.
  • Check the cupcakes every 5minutes and rotate the cupcakes to avoid the cakes getting burnt.
  • Allow it to bake for about 10 minutes, then remove from the oven and allow cooling.

The ingredients and tools needed for the above procedures include:

  • Oven
  • Cupcake pan
  • Bowl
  • Spring load ice cream scoop
  • Stirring rod or whisk
  • Butter and Eggs both at room temperature
  • Dry ingredients: flour, milk, Sugar
  • Liquid Flavors like chocolate, vanilla, Mint, strawberry, etc.
  • Paper liners
  • Cooking oil

You can personalize your cupcake by giving it a desired look and taste according to your preference. Frostings are often used to this effect, and below are the steps to prepare frostings:

  • Mix butter and sugar in a bowl and beat till it turns fluffy.
  • Add the desired amount of salt and cream and mix.
  • Beat in liquid flavor until combined, and add heavy cream until a moist outlook is gotten.
  • Pipe frostings unto cooked cupcakes.

Conclusion

Cupcakes exist in different flavors and forms to suit different demands and occasions, depending on the flavor and concept behind them. While cupcakes are age-friendly, there are some ingredients that are not advisable for kid’s cupcakes.
